Maria – Love never fails – Peru Aug 12, 2011

“Love never fails” (Corinthians 13:8) – August 12, 2011

I couldn’t resist going to Huanuco. Not on an official visit, not mission, just love. Some moments are captured in the photos. So many things to share but time is always against me. The important thing is to know God deeper and that it is a process that we can delay but not make to go faster…Jesus is the end.

“The Lord knows those who are His” (2 Timothy 2:19)

It’s been a while since my last message. Hope this brings hope and joy in the love of Jesus.

A lot is happening here but the main shaking is deeper inside me at the spiritual level. All I can say is that I had never imagined how awesome, merciful and beautiful God is and if I would have more of His presence I would not like to continue on earth. This is something you can only experience and does not even depend on me but is a move of God’s mercy for me. Why me? I don’t know. It is not about supernatural signs or wonders. That is not even important as it can also come from the other side. It is about the peace and rest of knowing He is God, the First and the Last and the Only One. I hope my joy does not confuse anyone but this is the main thing I have to share and as the song says I am here in Peru, "praising my Jesus all the day long".

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night asking myself how much of this last visit to Huangascar, was my own desire and how much God’s will. It wasn’t easy to go there…but even with all its challenges and work with the poor, the motive could have been wrong and that is the most important thing – to be in God’s Will. I am learning that the only protection is not to get out of God’s Will and living the Word of God in the heart and that means living in Jesus!

Strange, but the main thing I did in Huangascar was praying and reading my Bible and I knew the Lord of Hosts was protecting me. I can no longer ignore the checking of the Holy Spirit, to the point that I fear to step out in my own in missions where only Jesus can overcome obstacles. It is so relaxing to know that I am not expected to do anything else but recognize that the only saviour of the world is Jesus Christ!

There is so much I could share about Huangascar…there was one evening when near 40 indigenous women gathered together to share a soup they had prepared to welcome me. I did not talk much, all I said was that as they were sharing their food, Jesus was sharing His bread and blood through that facility, the “Mothers’ Club,” built through LJH. It wasn’t me. It was the Holy Spirit leading me to share that. Nothing from my own would have produced the move in the hearts of these women that have suffered so much. The gratitude and love from these people, that is so poor, is hard to describe. We shared about the teachings of Jesus on forgiveness and love. People started to hug each other and the anointing of God’s presence was very strong. What a privilege for me to be part of this miracle of love, sharing Jesus, the bread of life, in this little town lost in the Andes. A priest comes once a year during the month of August, to celebrate the day of the town and people drink and dance for 3 days. Other than that they work all year as farmers and taking care of sheep, goats and a few cows.

The members of the Mothers’ Club, all together have more than 160 children, many of them malnourished. There were two girls (14 and 15 years old) that were already mothers. These people who have hardly anything, did not allow me to pay for anything while I was in Huangascar, not even the ride that brought me down from the mountains of Huangascar to the closest coastal town, to take the bus to Lima. Jesus did the work and I was part of His team; what an adventure!

Yesterday, I was in a total different world in the city of Lima. My family gathered together to celebrate the national day of Peru. We have a new President and he has promised social inclusion of all Peruvians and reduction of poverty. May he not do it in “word or in tongue, but in deed and truth”. I have a big family here and many are artists. One of my sisters sings beautifully, my brother in law too; another niece plays the piano and a nephew plays what is called “cajon” (better than drums). We had lots of dancing and great food with the Peruvian flavour. It is part of our culture. I’ve been asking Jesus to help me to see each of them as He sees them and there is a new love that has broken many barriers between us. I don’t agree with all they do, but I like dancing, the food, music and love them all. It’s getting late, it’s already Sunday,

Maria in Peru! (July 18, 2011)

Some thoughts from Maria

I am in Peru. It is around 5 am. I will soon be travelling to Huangascar, high up in the mountains. I won’t be able to communicate from there….no phone or internet, just the stars and closer to God!
A few days before my trip I received a very strong message from God that touched me deeply. That same day at St. Patrick’s noon Mass the gospel was the same thing I had received. This is not something I would have chosen to do at this time when I could have been at the cottage swimming in the lake, but how can you resist when you know it is the Lord and not my own desire or convenience…I found a cheap flight to Peru (in the middle of high season) and I ended up in the mission field sooner than expected. The Word was:

"If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple" Many things have happened in just a few days confirming God wanted me here today. I am not a good writer, I spend very little time at the computer…the place where I’m going today has no computers, even a phone is a luxury…I love to be hidden where the power of God is manifest.

Just before coming to Peru I visited Fr. Joe Kane, that holy man that spent the great part of his life working with the poor in a shanty town in Lima. He has the expression of a child that can only come from prayer and obedience to God. I couldn’t stop crying. He held my hand, and took me to the chapel of the hospital where he is staying and we both sang in Spanish, the language of the heart…did you know that some things you can only say in Spanish or…in silence. On the flight Ottawa-Toronto I ended up sitting next to a woman that had a 7-month old baby. She was muslim and the name of the baby was Isa (Jesus in Arabic, that is what she said). Time was short for the sharing we had. She was a teacher and her thesis had been comparing some issues of Judaism, Islamism and Christianity. She knew well the Bible…but I knew Jesus.

I did not ask anyone to wait for me at the airport in Lima. I took the first taxi I found. The taxi driver ended up being Christian. His business card says "there is nothing impossible for God".

I’ve been spending time with a person who had a heart operation last week. I was amazed when he said the only explanation for him being alive was that God is giving him a chance to do few things before he goes. He wants to get together with me to talk about this (?) Strange, in the past he was always busy in conferences, trips, and making money.

So much more to share but it is so early, I’m still sleepy and have to travel soon. Don´t know when I can get in touch again.

News from Peru – Maria (March 20, 2011)

It was great to have Pierre, Emilie and Simon in Peru. Pierre will probably share about his experience at his return to Ottawa. They are now in Chile.

Here is something that might encourage your faith. The day before Pierre’s arrival, I had to meet someone from “Las Columnas” at Miraflores. Somehow we didn’t connect and I had to take a cab to downtown Lima. I don’t remember what I said to the driver but he ended sharing he was going to take his life that day. After he parked his car, I listened to him and shared what God put in my heart; the man was in tears. He ended repenting and receiving Jesus in his heart. He said he had felt the presence of God! I started to tremble myself…what an experience! In the end, he did not charge me anything and on top of that he couldn’t stop thanking me. Strange – I could have taken another cab and I might not have been ready to share what I shared, etc, etc. I was able to do it and to be used by God only because of all what I have lived to this day. Another time, I was sad because I did not have time to visit two sisters (one of them blind) I had been praying for (too far to go and too late to go already) so I went for a walk. Well, guess what, I met them at the park where I had gone for a walk. They had gone to visit a family member and decided to go out to buy an ice cream at the moment I was passing by that park and there we met. We did not care about the people around us. We held hands and gave glory to God. There are so many things happening everyday that I know it is the living God in His mercy and compassion for His children. I used to feel insecure to just pray by myself and thought God was being manifest because of the other person that was praying with me. Now, I just know the One that prays with me is Jesus and I accompany Him. What an honour and a joy!

Last night 3 kids that were not able to come to the Camp of Faith and Prayer in February, accepted Jesus in their hearts: two girls (9 and 11 years old) and a boy call “Angelito” (little angel; he is 7). One of these girl lives with her grandmother (her father and mother abandoned her at an early age), the other girl was so happy after she received Jesus, that she gave me a little toy that was very valuable to her. Angelito was amazed watching the two girls in tears and hugging me. I asked him if he wanted to receive Jesus. He said no because he didn’t want to cry. So he left, but after few minutes, he returned and said he really wanted to have Jesus. Of course, he ended up crying. He takes care of his blind mom. I only learned that she was blind recently, when I became curious about this child that was always trying to call my attention and told me he creates songs for God. Pierre must remember him because there was one day we went with the kids to a park and Angelito sat with us and sang a song to God that was his own creation. These kids are so wounded, many times by their own parents but also have the innocence that allow them to receive the living God in a way most people can’t.

Here are some pictures of Pierre walking in the middle of water (it is not the Jordan by the way). In a green field “picking up the harvest”, etc. There was no helicopter but they tried the Peruvian moto-taxi and we had lots of fun. It was good for the spirit!

“Chalice” mission is coming tomorrow (over 30 people!). There is lots of love in the work they do. I’ll be travelling with them to the north of Peru for a few days and then back to Canada. I heard there was a fire near my place in Ottawa. Time to be back.

Maria – latest from Peru (March 5, 2011)

March 6, 2011

We are part of the same Body of Christ

I’ve just finished talking with Lucille through Skype. I was glad she couldn’t see me because I am wearing one of Mike’s t-shirts he left for the poor (…I needed it). I contacted her after reading her e-mail where she says:

“Nicolas really misses the people in Peru. I don’t know what got into him last night, but he was crying saying he missed all his friends. He said he got close to people in just a few days. Here it takes very long to get to know people.”

Well, last night I took my 90 year old mom to the movie (“The King’s Speech”) and after that we had the best hamburger of the world (“good for the stomach”). We went to a place where Lucille, Mike and Coco had gone with me for ice cream not long ago. At that time Coco shared his ice cream with a street kid. Somehow food is nicer when we share. I thought of them and wished they were still in Peru, enjoying that nice hamburger with us. I felt a bit sad they were not with us. They came from so far away and did not go to Cusco or even Huanuco or to the places tourists usually go. I was still thinking of them and woke up at night and asked God to bless them in the little I was able to offer. Isn’t this amazing? Coco was sensitive to my feeling at the restaurant and subsequent prayer. We are part of the same precious Body of Christ no matter the distance and what happens in one of the members affects the whole body!

Julio, the ex-street kid I met when he was only 11, contacted me recently. He is now 23 years old. Still selling candies, but so good with people that he is quiet successful. He lives in a shanty town where he has built a small wooden house and has a stove, a fridge, and even a TV! He works from 7 am to 11 pm with breaks for his meals. Still playing football and in excellent shape.

The times he used to sleep on cardboard in the streets are gone, also the difficult years when he tried drugs, alcohol and used to lie to me (but not to God). He has even taken me for dinner and did not let me pay (Chinese meal). Is this the Julio that drove me crazy to the point that I used to tell him, “even if I get tired of you, Jesus will never give up”. He blesses people in the name of Jesus when he sells his candies and knows by experience about the power there is in the living Word of God. That is the Jesus he preaches, the Jesus that never gave up on him, and God uses him. Julio is one of today’s harvest. What a privilege to see this kid that could had been dead so many times, so full of the joy of the Lord.

This past Monday Julio accompanied me to Las Columnas and shared his story with the kids. It was so funny when a 12 year old (skinny kid) asked Julio for advice on what to eat to get muscles. After that, some of the kids, Julio and I went to a place a few blocks from Las Columnas where they could play football. There was a group of older kids in their 20s that accepted to play with my kids and guess what, the kids of las Columnas (under 14 except for Julio) won the game. The ones that were watching (including me) were cheering, jumping and enjoying this game so much.

Well, now I am thinking in my dear friend Pierre and his daughter Emilie, soon coming for the third time to Peru. For Simon it will be his first time. I am remembering when in one of our missions (in Huanuco) Pierre said something I will never forget. Imagine the scenery, lines of people hoping to receive prayer in the park in front of the church and Pierre looks at me and says, “Maria, they think we are missionaries and we are just a bunch of nobodies” ….it is great to be just simple people with the desire to serve God not thinking we are in any higher level but rejoicing in serving and living in the joy of the Lord.

More news from Maria in Peru – Feb 3/11

February 3, 2011

Hi there:

In an hour 15 people from “Las Columnas”, “Huanuco” and Canada will be joining the Camp of Faith and Prayer in the outskirts of Lima. I’ll be sharing more with you next week after the Camp is over, but please keep us in your prayers tonight at LJH group.

Lucille, Michael and Coco (from Canada) have the main ingredient needed to do God’s work here in Peru. “Love”, the universal and powerful language that the poor and destitute of the world so easily understand.

I am getting use to see miracles every day. Jesus example is what move us here and is contagious, no need for courses or books for that. In fact, the ones that teach us the most are children.

You are all in my heart. I hope it is not so cold there.

Hasta pronto,

Maria

Huangascar is a little town lost in the middle of the Andes mountains located at 2,700 meters above sea level. Its people are mainly indigenous. You get there by taking a gravel road which is so narrow that only one car can pass at a time. In places, it is scary to look down from the car at the edge of the road to the valley below. To go there you have to have your own transportation or use a very old bus that goes there only once a week.People live from their little plots of land and sometimes raise guinea pigs, sheep, or cows. This is a place really isolated from the world. Poverty is acute. In 2007, an earthquake, 7.9 on the Ritcher scale, collapsed many of the houses and key institutions in the town such as the church, school and the Mothers’ Club.I’ve been in Huangascar a few times; one of those times a LJH mission came with me. Since then we have been contributing to the construction of the Mothers’ Club, a building created to help the needs of the most destitute in the town and surrounding areas.

Our involvement with Huangascar has not been easy or comfortable. It never is when we have to start from scratch and there is only faith sustaining us – the faith of Abraham that calls things that are not as if they were, things have been happening in His way and in His time.  Sometimes it was working against all odds to the point people thought I was crazy. Initially, in 2008, I went to Huangascar in obedience. I had been told about the existence of this town by my family. When I saw the condition of poverty of the people, I knew it was God’s will to be there. What to do, how to do it, learning to listen to Him…so much that only a miracle could work things out. Part of that miracle was when LJH agreed to make Huangascar part of its mission.

The initial budget for the construction came to about US$65,000 (an architect did the design of the Mothers’ Club using the feedback of the mothers). Somehow with a lot of sacrifice from people that donated not only their money but their work (including the builder and women of the town), the main structure is finished. There is still need for about US$10,000 to complete the construction (doors, windows, tiles, washrooms, etc.). See the latest photos of the Mothers’ Club below.

If going to Huangascar is difficult, can you imagine taking the bricks and cement and all the materials for the construction? There have been people working there for over 10 hours a day for less than $10. Strong men used to playing soccer in high altitudes were the workers. There was no money to pay an architect to supervise the construction on a regular basis; but the builder who has a lot of experience in construction took over and did amazing work.

His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. If we see Jesus in the poor the supernatural move of God comes. Yes, there is spiritual oppression (Opus Dei, the right wing of the Catholic church is in the area), corruption, physical constraints and much more. Thanks be to God, it is not by our own strength but by His mighty power and He will complete what He has started.

Many thanks, to all those in the LJH community that trusted and donated for the construction of the Mothers’ Club in Huangascar, and everyone else outside of LJH as well.

Feliz Navidad from Peru (Maria)

December 16, 2010

I have just come back from Huanaco. The construction of the soup kitchen there started 5 years ago after our first LJH mission visited Huanuco. As Christians we are called ‘to believe, trusting in the Lord with all our hearts, not leaning on our own understanding’ and ‘loving our neighbour as ourselves’ While we all fall short of that, there was a moment of ‘enlightenment’ and “walking in faith” when we were touched by God and decided to start supporting the construction of the current soup kitchen.

It was faith that moved us. We are a small Catholic community in Vanier with less than 50 members, many poor and destitute. Since then more than half of the community has visited Peru (including children and people over 80 years old). It’s been a process of “More of Him and less of us” with the hope to become ‘salt of the earth, light of the world’. The material help was important to the people of Huanaco but even more important is what has happened in the hearts of people. Here are some stories of the kids.

Ruth

Four days before my arrival, Ruth, my God child, had a dream. She saw me coming to Huanuco. She shared this with her family and some people at school. Nobody knew I was coming and people laughed at her. The first thing I did on my arrival was to go running up the hill to the soup kitchen. People were amazed when I showed up. So my dear Ruth has gained new respect in the eyes of others and is a testimony of God’s love in many things she does.

I’ve been praying for this 11 year old girl since she was six. The first time I met her she was a little girl without shoes playing in the garbage. Less than two years ago Ruth together with other 5 kids and an adult traveled for 9 hours from Huanuco to the Camp of Faith and Prayer in Lima. Now she has a Bible and knows more than most kids about God’s power and love.

I’ve been sleeping on the second floor of the soup kitchen. It feels so close to the stars and the beautiful scenery of Huanuco can be seen from the balcony. Ruth brought her mattress and slept at the soup kitchen all the time I was there. It was important to share with this 11 year old girl about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The first night we sang for a while, lit a candle and prayed. The overwhelming presence of the Holy Spirit was so strong that Ruth started to cry. We were sitting on the mattress and couldn’t get up for a while. Everything was dark except for the candle.

José

This six year old kid joined us the second night. He followed me everywhere and did not care about walking in the rain without shoes. He learned to read during the time I was there. This is a major accomplishment considering his parents don’t know how to read. He is a smart kid and not fearful of anything. Sadly, when he asks too much or is too ‘active’, his mother hits him. I gave him a little motorcycle toy and a pencil sharpener I got at ‘garage sales’ in Ottawa. Treasures for him.

Alex

On my third day, Alex managed to stay at the soup kitchen too. One night he held me and shared with me that two years ago a fellow at the market forced him into a bathroom and sexually abused him. Alex said he can’t forget his face. He is now 10 years old and I am the first person he shared that with. Not even his parents realize what he’s gone through.

That night, the four of us (Ruth, José, Alex and I) prayed for all the people in the mountain and shared 1 Corinthians’ 13 about the importance of love. Around 3 am José, half sleeping and half awake, started to sign the song that calls the Holy Spirit. There has been much prayer coming from the kids in this visit.

Alfredo

This kid is already 13 but looks more like 11 due to malnurishment. He helps the household economy selling candies or working at the fruit market after school. He does not have a father. He’s been sending me very encouraging Bible based messages by e-mail for the last 2 years. He’s always smiling and helpful. In May 2010, when the last mission came to Huanuco, I met his mother who was in need of an operation in the uterus and also had very bad gastritis. We prayed for her (all I could do). Recently she started to feel better and has already gone to 3 doctors to be tested and the 3 of them said there is nothing to operate, she does not have gastritis problem. This must be a miracle. is it not?

Movie Night and ‘Shalom’

After the movie I taught the kids a song I know in Spanish. It is about calling the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth and justice, that I sing when I am sad or going through something only God can change. Ruth sang with me and all the kids were just listening. After that we did the “Shalom”. In this activity you sing and hug the other person wishing him or her peace. At that moment you are suppose to look in the eyes of that person and think of the one that has hurt you the most in your life. The 4 orphans couldn’t look in my eyes and were in tears (their father killed their mother and is living with another woman). The wounds that hurt the most are the ones that can’t be seen with our physical eyes but only love and forgiveness can heal.

Swimming Pool

This past Sunday we went to a swimming pool. 13 kids (14 people including me) in a couple of “taximotos” (motorcycles with seats at the back). They are suppose to have a maximum of 3 people, including the driver. We were 7 in each moto taxi!. This children enjoyed everything so much. While they were swimming I was dancing around the pool with “salsa”. Going to a swimming pool is a major treat for them. They don’t have washrooms at home (they use latrines). You can make them happy with so little. The little things I buy at garage sales in Canada are treasures for them.

Life in Huanaco

Almost every family has had 2 or 3 kids dying before they were 3 years old (usually stomach problems or accidents). The rate of child and mother mortality is extremely high. Cases of rape are usually within their own family (brother, uncle, etc). There are many single mothers. A 12 year old girl gets up at 4 am to work at a butcher and is pay less than $1 a day. She has 4 sisters and the father is involved with another woman and only gives the mother 50 soles a month (less than $20).

Different people brought me food every night. It was very moving that one of poorest woman had killed her little pig to cook it for me. She brought it with “cancha” (dry roasted corn).

Time was short. I taught math, and read various books according to the age of the kids, visited people in their homes, etc. Because I was living as them they were more open with me (sharing their hearts, food and love). Most kids don’t know the basics for their age but almost everybody is eager to learn. At school the teacher hits them and teaching is poor. The kids love to be encouraged. I had to give marks and congratulate them all the time. On my last night at the soup kitchen I was reading a story until very late with Jose. He’s learned to read in 6 days! a major accomplishment considering none of his parents can read.

On my last night I stayed at the hostel in the main plaza. Some of the kids came to say good bye. They were soaking wet because of the rain. We had a drink of quinua and a sandwich and I gave a big and long hug to each of them. Ruth made me promise that I will pray for Huanuco and her every day at a certain time that she knows, she will also do it. Alex felt embarrassed to cry but at the end he broke in tears. We all prayed for Jonathan who had an accident a couple of years ago (falling from a two story house breaking his teeth and hitting his head badly). It was a way of showing love, solidarity and faith in the One that can create new things from nothing. At the end Jonathan felt something strong happen and ‘felt as if his whole body had changed’ (that is what he said).

There were many divine appointments, especially meeting someone that also works with kids. This person lives the Bible without talking too much and kids respect him. When we started the missions to Peru the Lord gave me Isaiah 58:6-9 about the kind of fasting He wants. I’ve tried to be faithful to that. We’ve responded to the Lord’s call (all the kids at the soup kitchen) and He’s answered: Here I am.

All my love to you and Merry Christmas!

Maria
